Max Merritt and The Triffids To Be Inducted Into Hall of Fame

By Paul Cashmere

Max Merritt and The Triffids will join Dragon and Russell Morris in the 2008 ARIA Hall of Fame.

The ARIA Hall of Fame is Australia's homage to its greatest music stars.

Kiwi Max Merritt moved to Australia in 1964 with his band The Meteors. In 1975, he delivered the now classic 'Slipping Away'.

In a statement Merritt said, ""I am pleased and honoured to be inducted in such illustrious company as Russell Morris and Marc Hunter. My Mum, Dad & Stewie would have been very, very proud".

Merritt is suffering from kidney failure and is currently being cared for at Melbourne's Epworth Hospital.

The Triffids released their debut album 'Treeless Plain' in 1983. David McComb, Alsy McDonald and Phil Kakulas along with Martyn P Casey and Jill Birt, made up the band. They broke up in 1989 after it was discovered singer McComb had a congenial heart defect. He died in 1999.

The remaining members of The Triffids said "Things have changed a lot since The Triffids headed to the UK in search of a more favourable musical climate in the early eighties. Back then we could never imagine being recognised in this way and we only wish David McComb was here to enjoy it with us, irony and all. While still pinching ourselves to make sure it's real, we appreciate the honour - and we think Dave would too. It pleases us greatly that he's being remembered through his songs and the way we played them".

The ARIA Hall of Fame will take place on Tuesday July 1 at Melbourne Town Hall.
